Age-Friendly Built Environment

Age-friendly built environments have been promoted by the World Health Organisation (WHO, Geneva, Switzerland) under Global Cities (AFC) movement in which three domains are related to environment. These are: housing, transportation, outdoor spaces and public buildings. The aim is foster active ageing optimising opportunities for older adults maximise their independent living ability participate communities enhance quality of life wellbeing. An age-friendly environment inclusive, accessible, respects individual needs addresses wide range capacities across course life. housing promotes familiar surroundings maintains social connections at neighbourhood community levels. Both buildings provide barrier-free provisions minimise subsequent adaptations. encourage spend time outside engage with others against isolation loneliness. transport enables get around enhances mobility. For achieving an environment, a holistic approach required enable living, inclusion participation society. eight AFC not mutually exclusive but overlap support one another.
